TGIT: Thank God It’s Thursday

Thank God it’s… Thursday?

Yes. Tomorrow is Friday and the work day is already almost over (I leave at 6).

Why am I annoyed? Because a coworker just made this inane comment to me, “I was telling ____ I like your dress. It’d be perfect to turn into a nice big quilt.

So I gave this look:

…and quickly walked away.

Inside I was thinking this:

But to remain professional, I did not say that out loud.

Note: the dress is a classic madras dress that I got almost 10 years ago from J.Crew. A classic size 6 that drapes really well and is perfect in our humid RVA weather.:

[thank you Dragonfly]

A “big quilt” hmm? Who says that to another woman!? Especially a younger woman who is not your friend and you don’t even have a working relationship with her. Plus, madras does not really make me think of quilts, either (although Google tells me they are big with children who shop at Pottery Barn). I don’t think my dress, if turned into a quilt, could cover you, let alone any size of a bed!

Here is how that snide, you-must-be-post-menopausal-and-decided-to-no-longer-care-about-your-professional-appearance-unlike-me comment made me feel.

  1. Glad I am not alone in wondering where social skills/style went! These women honestly wear what look like yoga pants (elastic waistband) and “graphic/dressy” t-shirts while I wear suits and dresses.

My Mom is older than these women – she will be 69 in September – and she has never dressed for any job as casually as these women do!

  2. ugh. that's just not right – why didn't she respect the “inside voice” thing herself. was she trying to be clever? witty? it was obviously neither. i'm so sorry that happened. 🙁

  3. Your coworker must have never been taught “if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all”. That's just rude! I also love madras and think it doesn't look like a quilt at all!

  4. It is okay. Sometimes a rant-y post and hearing positive feedback – from others like you! – makes me feel better so much faster! Thank you for that.

  5. I agree – still scratching my head on the quilt comment. I wish people at work were not competitive. I think it has to do with the age difference, my education, and honestly… my youth and energy. I am sure it boils down to those things as there is no other reason for it!

  6. Um….do you work in a high school, and when you say “co-worker”, are you meaning to say “”high-school students”? What the F-ing F!?!? Out of the blue? That is one insecure chick who needs to do something like that. Sometimes you forget that these people exist. Madras is a classic American summer staple. She clearly does not know this. F her.

  7. I myself love madras and I'm sure it look beautiful on you. She can go and F herself!
(that was inappropriate and unladylike, I apologize for my outburst)

  8. HAHA! Thank you so much for your comment. So funny how many of y'all posted “F her!” Made me feel better and know I wasn't overreacting when I felt so offended.
